Discover Ravangla – The Serene Heart of South Sikkim
Ravangla travel rewards visitors with a quieter side of Sikkim that few tourists discover. Situated in the southern part of the state, this small town sits at 7,350 feet and offers cool mountain air, dense forests, and views of the Kanyam Valley. Unlike the busier hill stations, Ravangla feels genuinely peaceful. You'll find rhododendron forests, terraced farms, and Lepcha villages where life moves at its own pace.
The town works well for families seeking a break from noise and pollution, couples wanting solitude, and solo travellers interested in trekking and local culture. There's no crowded bazaar or aggressive tourism infrastructure here—just clean air, kind locals, and easy access to natural attractions. If you want Instagram-famous spots, go elsewhere. If you want to actually feel rested, Ravangla delivers.
Summer (March to May) brings pleasant weather with daytime temperatures around 15–22°C. Clear skies mean good visibility of the surrounding peaks. This is peak season, so expect higher prices and more visitors, though "more" is still quite manageable by Indian hill station standards.
Monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rainfall, especially July and August. Roads can become slippery and landslides occasionally block access. However, the forests turn lush green, and accommodation prices drop significantly. If you don't mind wet weather and prefer solitude, you'll find good monsoon deals here.
Winter (October to February) is when Ravangla truly shines. October and November offer clear skies, cool temperatures (5–15°C), and crisp mountain light—perfect for photography and trekking. December through February can see occasional frost and rare snow, but roads stay open. January and February are the coldest months. This is the second peak season.
Off-season rates run from June through September and mid-February through late February. Book ahead during October-November and March-May.
Ravangla sits roughly 65 kilometers south of Gangtok, the state capital. The journey from Gangtok takes about 3 hours by road through winding mountain passes. The nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri in West Bengal, about 120 kilometers away, roughly 4–5 hours by road. The nearest railway station is also at Siliguri, about 130 kilometers north.
From major Indian cities, you'll need to fly or train to Siliguri first, then drive to Ravangla. From Kolkata, it's roughly 600 kilometers (12–14 hours). From Delhi, the fastest route is a flight to Bagdogra followed by the drive. From Mumbai, you'll need a flight plus ground transport.
